Natchaug Family Resource Center (FRC)
The mission of the FRC is to strengthen family practices and grow quality early childhood development through education, information and activities for families. There are seven components that are legislated for our grant. One of the components is one through which the FRC provides direct service through the Parents As Teachers Program (PAT). PAT provides curriculum for parents with children from birth to age five. This PAT curriculum is used to plan our Learning Connections Groups that meets on Tuesday's and Thursdays' from 9:00am to 10:30 am, located in room 122. Families are always welcome.
Parents are also encouraged to participate in the home visit piece of the Parents As Teachers Program. Each visit is specifically designed for your child's age. During each visit a parent educator follows the set curriculum which includes a story to read as well as activities for the parent and child to do together during the visit. The parent educator also leaves parenting information and additional activities so that the parent can continue to develop their child's skills with appropriate expectations for their developmental age. The parent educator can refer families to other educational programs and social services that are found in the community on a need basis.
An additional part of our program is that we also offer field trips to the Read for the Record community wide event, held in the fall. Also in the fall, we coordinate a trip to a farm. In the spring we offer a trip as well as a collaborative end of the year picnic with the North Windham Family Resource Center. This program is open to all families and is free of cost. Our families also have the opportunity to receive free tickets to the arts Sunday concerts in Storrs at the UCONN Jorgensen Center,
The FRC houses a lending library and computer access for parental use. The room is open daily for these purposes. Our popular programs include, Dads group (M.I.K.E.), Moms group, and we support the PTO and other school activities thought out the school year. This coming year we are collaborating with the Girl Scouts to provide girls kindergarten through third grade an after school scouting experience. For the fourth and fifth grade students an eight week lunch bunch program. Parents are welcome to visit anytime.
